Leading medical device manufacturer, Boddingtons, has won an order from a leading UK OEM healthcare company for the volume production of insert-moulded syringes.

Andy Tibbs, Boddingtons CEO, says that ‘we were delighted to partner our new client every step of the way through this complex but satisfying project which will boost our own manufacturing skill sets as well as providing much needed products for the world’s eye-care market.

A new Engel 160t electric injection moulding machine together with a 6 axis Kuka robot forms part of the investment in the new production cell at Boddingtons.

An 8 + 8 mould 180 degree rotating mould tool is deployed in the twin shot part of the Engel machine and a total of four mould tools have been made by Boddingtons on behalf of the OEM client.

The new production cell will primarily manufacture syringe devices which will be used in applications for ocular healthcare. The main body of the syringe is moulded in medical grade polypropylene and a TPE based plug is then inserted into the syringe tube.

Boddingtons has proven its medical manufacturing flexibility through the 2020 and the Covid 19 pandemic. Andy Tibbs urges the UK’s med-tech and healthcare sector to learn the recent lessons of marketplace and to push forward with innovation, efficiency and procurement reform in the coming months.

‘Emergencies often call for bold measures,’ says Tibbs, ‘and capital investment to meet the needs of the marketplace is one such measure to take right now.

Clinical and healthcare need around the world has increased greatly,’ he notes, ‘and is not likely to decrease any time soon. We believe that successful medical manufacturers will invest accordingly and will reap the rewards.’

Boddingtons continues to design and manufacture new products and components in relation to COVID 19 as well as increase its sales in traditional med-tech and healthcare markets.

Recent investments– in Class 7 cleanroom expansions; in the Mitutoyo Quick Vision Active CMM machine and in the universal MDSAP medical quality qualification – underline the company’s commitment to global medical manufacturing.

Boddingtons will be exhibiting at both the Interplas and Med Tech Innovation, NEC, Birmingham, September 28-30th and then again at Medica Compamed, Düsseldorf, November 15-18th
